It doesn’t have to be that way. We know it’s hard to plan for something you can’t imagine, so try the numbers below and see how yours could look. No sign-up, no catch.

Questions

FAQs for pension & retirement planning

Can’t see your question? We’re happy to help.

A Personal Retirement Savings Account is a personal pension that you own. It stays with you if you change jobs, your employer can contribute to it, and your contributions can qualify for tax relief.

A company pension is set up by your employer for its employees, with rules set by the scheme. A PRSA is a personal contract that belongs to you and moves with you. Which suits you better depends on your job, your employer’s contributions and your plans.

Pension contributions can get income tax relief at your highest rate of tax, up to limits based on your age and earnings. It is one of the most effective ways to save for retirement. We can show you exactly what applies to you.

Auto-enrolment is a State scheme that automatically enrols employees who are not already in a workplace pension, with contributions from you, your employer and the State. If you already have a pension through work, you may not be affected. We can check where you stand.

Usually not before a minimum age, which depends on the type of pension you have. There are limited exceptions, such as serious ill health. We can explain the options for your pension.

There’s no single right number. It depends on the income you want in retirement, when you plan to stop working and what other income you’ll have, including the State Pension. Our calculator gives a rough picture, and a review gives you a proper answer.

You usually have options: leave it where it is, move it to your new employer’s scheme, or transfer it to a personal arrangement such as a PRSA. The right choice depends on the scheme and your plans, so it’s worth getting advice before you decide.
